The leaves of 10 species of the genus Gouania (Rhamnaceae) cited for Mexico were studied with the goal of characterizing their venation patterns and characters of the foliar epidermis that allow taxonomic differentiation and that together with other morphological aspects support the identification of species, that in this genus, is based on the characters of the fruits and not always found in the field and therefore, several of the Herbarium specimens lack them. The leaves were cleared, stained and photographed. Venation patterns of second, third and fourth order were described and illustrated for this study, which showed craspedodroma, semi-craspedodroma and eucramptodroma-brochidodroma type. The number of secondary veins in the leaf blade, the absence or presence of glandular structures on the leave margin, as well as whether they are elevated as cupula or not, the absence or presence of trichomes and the type of stomata were characters that made possible the differentiation of the 10 species studied, demonstrating the importance of leave architecture in the taxonomic recognition of specimens.
