Abstract

Our country has adopted all those ornamental species that are famous in the
world, including some representing Mexico; nevertheless, there are native species
with huge ornamental potential that are
not being used. In view of this we developed a list of wild plants that are sold
commercially in the flower markets of
Tenancingo, State of Mexico, and Jamaica, DF, Mexico. Field work was carried
out during the summer-autumn season
(June 21-December 21, 2007). Each study
site was visited every eight days during
this period for the purpose of obtaining
and identifying specimens, conducting
interviews, and recording common name,
if possible the place of collection, time
of collection, the seller, location of market and ornamental value. Taxonomic
identification was made through the use
of keys available in the literature. We
report 131 wild species, belonging to 93
genera in 42 families. Orchidaceae was
the best-represented family at the species
level. In terms of ornamental value it is
the whole plant that provides the greatest
ornamental value with 41%.
