LA FAMILIA SPHACELARIACEAE (SPHACELARIALES, PHAEOPHYTA) EN LAS COSTAS DE MÉXICO
Abstract
B e n t h i c a l g a e s a m p l e s o f f a m i l y
Sphacelariaceae were taken in several
localities in the Mexico’s Pacific and
Atlantic shores; between 1979 and
1996. Also herbarium specimens are
housed i n d i f f e r e n t s h e r b a r i a w e r e
examinated to check the information
a b o u t t h i s f a m i l y, m o r e o v e r a n d
extensive bibliographic revision of the
family Sphacelariaceae (Sphacelariales,
Phaeophyta) previously recorded in
the Mexico’s shores was realizated.
The family Sphacelariaceae contains one
genus: Sphacelaria Lyngbye and six species;
S. brachygonia Montagne, S. californica
Sauvageau ex Setchell et Gardner, S. fusca
(Hudson) S.F. Gray, S. novae-hollandiae
Sonder, S. rigidula Kützing and S.
tribuloides Meneghini; these species are
distributed in temperate and warm waters
of Mexican Pacific and Atlantic shores, one
of them, S. rigidula is widely distributed
from Ensenada, Baja California to Bahía
Tangolunda, Oaxaca in the Pacific and
from Banco Chinchorro, Quintana Roo
to Monte Pío, Veracruz in the Atlantic.
Morphological description, reproductive
stage, sustrate, tidal level, distribution
range, drawings, wave exposure, and key
for determinations are included.
